Funeral & Burial Coverage
Final-expense insurance is generally a smaller life insurance policy purchased for one person. After the insured person dies and an approved claim is paid, the policy benefit goes to the named beneficiary. The beneficiary may use the money to help pay funeral, burial, cremation, memorial, or other final expenses. Coverage amounts, premiums, eligibility, waiting periods, and limitations depend on the insurer and policy.
A funeral with viewing and burial had a national median cost of $7,848 in the NFDA’s 2021 study, or $9,420 with a vault. Those figures did not include cemetery property, a monument or marker, flowers, an obituary, a reception, travel, or other choices. When those items are added, a family’s complete arrangements can reach $15,000 or more; elaborate arrangements may cost considerably more.

The policyholder names the person who should receive the death benefit after an approved claim.
The beneficiary may use the benefit for funeral, burial, cremation, memorial, and other final expenses.
